What does "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose" mean for your homeschooling? 


This should've been my homeschooling mantra a long time ago--the quote from Friday Night Lights is an all time favorite of mine. 


Like I've told so many, I made ALL the homeschooling mistake. Twice! It's a wonder Liam and I both survived how rabid I was those first 4 weeks. 

Currently in our collective landscape, lives are tipping and unbalanced with moderately still-frenzied pandemic-schooling, fifty shades of remote learning and micro-pods popping. 

So, It's GO TIME: to start fresh with CLEAR EYES and a FULL HEART in our own homeschooling. Come along with me?

Let's start with FULL HEARTS. First of all, what is YOUR love Language? What do YOU need to keep your bucket full as a homeschooling parent? Make a plan to come with your WHOLE HEART.

A GLIMPSE INTO KEEPING LIAM'S HEART FULL


Every week, I write ONE THANK YOU NOTE to Liam. For what/ ANYTHING! For reading well, for his sense of humor, for his laugh and how it fills me up inside with joy. See, his Love Language is Words of Affirmation. 

Just like me, encouragement and recognition can keep him soaring for a week. Also, the flip side is that stressed tones of voice have an extra big impact for him. 

My FAVORITE full heart home school momma resource is Brave Learner by Julie Bogart. It changed my whole perspective, only in giving me "permission' to go with what I already knew was right with learning and right for Liam.

Don't LOSE time, sleep or your mind worrying excessively about the PERFECT homeschool. 


 Let me lay two brain-based resources on you. Here's some tasty research to back up the case for SIMPLICITY and intentionally attending to both your own and your child's STRESS loads. 

1. The case for SIMPLICITY with a Simplicity Starter Kit and tons of resources via  Kim John Payne. Oh and his voice on the podcasts is pure melted butter. 

 2. REDUCING STRESS a'la' Self-Reg framework with Dr. Stuart Shanker and the MEHRIT Centre in Canada. Friend, you gotta listen to the podcasts too, ideally on a stress reducing walk. This WILL change your LIFE and homeschooling for the better. 


 Remember to KISS! KEEP IT SIMPLE SWEETIE... you'll thank yourself for this!

3. Fill your child's HEART in their own love language 
4. Know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are part of a WINNING TEAM for your child...You just CAN'T LOSE, friend!

To Camp or Not to Camp? In July, we had an advertised week-long "sensory-friendly" camp planned and purchased for Liam. It was touted as a camp for children on the autism spectrum or with sensory needs. It ran 9 am-12 noon each day- 3 hours of "fun." With an adaptive recreational specialist, mind you. Three hours. Brave Creativity: Becoming My BEST Homeschooling Self

Reconnecting with WONDER Recently I read Kindness and Wonder about Fred Rogers (Mister Rogers). One story grabbed me about a preschool that had a local sculptor who was also a professor come in and teach sculpting once a week. One year, they changed it up.  The sculptor simply came in with his supplies and sat in the middle of the preschool area and enjoyed sculpting in front of them. That's IT. No "formal" lesson plan or telling the children how to sculpt. He brought his joy and love of sculpting and integrated. Guess what they found? In this cohort, the children created more sculptures than any cohort ever had before and on measures of complexity and creativity , they far surpassed prior peers.  This story circled me back to the concept of Big Sistering  learning discovered in The Brave Learner by Julie Bogart.
